Wee Companions is San Diego's small animal rescue. Visit them online or in person for all of the rat supplies you need &
support a great cause!
Midwest Critter Nation cages are the very best. They have large doors and are easy to put together and take apart for deep cleaning.
Harlan Teklad is the most nutritious, complete rat food on the market today. For a less expensive option, Kalmbach 18% is also a good quality feed.
The Petmate 2-Door Carrier will last the lifetime of your rats and is both well-ventilated & secure.
Lixit flat-sided glass water bottles are the only water bottles we use - easy to clean, durable, simply the best!
Rats should have lots of levels and hiding spots - DDR rats have at least 2 hammocks and/or tubes on each level of their cages at all times.
Put 1" of paper pellet litter in your rats' litter pans once a week. Males will need more frequent litter changes than females (~every 5 days).
Put one litter pan on each level of your rats' cage. Only clean the outside of the litter pan to encourage your rats to continue using them.
We recommend ALWAYS using a hook to remove your snake from their enclosure. An 18" or 24" standard hook is fine for baby Boas, but you'll want this big "Python Hook" for adults.
We love Animal Plastics cages! DDR Boas start their lives in ball python racks, then they move up to a 4' x 2' x 2' cage. When they reach adult size (4' - 6'), they move up to the 6' x 2' x 2' model (larger for our big females)
We feed Cold Blooded Cafe F/T rodents to all of our snakes. They're the best in the West (we like Big Apple Herp on the East Coast, too!
Forest Floor is perfect for large snakes - it stays clean and the Boas can't move it around like coco coir.
Cement mixing pans make great water dishes for snakes! A 24" pan will serve as a great dish for most Boas.
All snakes need at least two hides - one on the cool end of the enclosure (75-85F) and one on the warm end of the enclosure (85-95F).
Pet Kingdom is an amazing local resource for reptile keepers here in San Diego. They carry all of the supplies you will need for your new snake(s), and their reptile department staff are incredibly helpful if you have any questions!
We feed Cold Blooded Cafe F/T rodents to all of our snakes. They're the best in the West!
We recommend ALWAYS using a hook to remove snakes from their enclosures. Safety first!
All snakes need at least two hides - one on the cooler side of the enclosure (~ 75-85 F) and one on the warmer side (~ 90-95 F)
All snakes should have access to a large, shallow water pan with about 2" of water for soaking.
There are many commercially available 4 x 2 x 2 enclosures that are appropriate for ball pythons. We recommend one with a solid top (no screens) to help retain humidity of 50-80%.
BabiChip is attractive, easy to clean , and retains humidity well. We use it in all of our ball python tubs!
